If at any time an author can bring out emotions in a reader, they are a success. If they can draw in a reader to feel engaged in the journey of their new book friends, they earn more respect. If an author can leave a reader feeling intrigued, inspired, and even offer healing, they’ve gained a bibliophile fanatic for life. - Shani K. - The Chronicles of an Abibliophobiac.

Book Review

When Alora told me about this book long before she finalized it, I told her she was evil! Tempting me with a new read from her? PFFT! Yup, I’ve read every one one of her other books and I’ve noticed as each new one comes out, her storytelling is stronger, more creative and awesome. She sent me a review copy of the book and she knew what was coming. Several times I’d stop reading and message her. I’d yell at her for making me cry, ask questions, yell some more, praise her, share little things I noticed that were interesting. Yes, yell some more when I cried harder. I told her I think she secretly lives to make me cry like that! But let me get to the best part of these ramblings, my review!

This story follows the lives of 13 individuals. Yes really! I honestly don’t know how she was able to effectively intertwine their lives together in a way that worked so well and made sense. But she did. The title alone for me is strong. Because at some time in our lives the decisions we make can make or break us and it’s the price we pay for them. It’s not easy, and it was far from easy for the many characters she shares with us.

Through their shared POV (point of view) we’re taken on a suspenseful journey that keeps you guessing. Alora sets the scene well and quickly from the beginning with the introduction to two characters. Inadvertently they are pulled into a dangerous situation involving some seriously scary freaking people who will do whatever it takes to make sure the plans they set in motion continue, at any cost. Crime pays well for some and the web of deceit and fear they weave snags these 13 people and holds them tightly. What they don’t expect is the connections that are made whether it be through friendships, circumstance, decisions or tragedy. Who can they really trust in all of it? How can they get out of this huge, scary mess in one piece, with no pain? Sadly, they can’t. But can you figure out who has to pay the ultimate price before they do?

Creative adoration (positives): Alora really brought some very raw, real and hard realities to the surface with this book. The active drug trades, violence, gangs and pull of arrogant power are showcased for just what they are, an ugly and seedy side to the world. I LOVED the way she captured it all but was able to make the characters relevant. Each character is unique and has their own story. Pacer, Randy, Marvey and Harper are probably my favorites of them all. But ask me again tomorrow and I’ll probably give you another list!

Creative indifference (negatives): The only thing I could say is that sometimes it made me a little dizzy so to speak to remember little things as I was reading through. But it didn’t take away from the story in any way.

Creative appraisal (overall): Alora was very successful in her goal of writing a book that’s a bit different from most in the romantic suspense genre. It’s action packed and I loved then. It was an awesome read for me and one that is quite different from her other books. I loved the characters and think that some of them might be good for a spin off novella on their own in the future! (I’ll leave that bit of a hint right here.……)

My star rating: 5 out of 5 stars!
